The Confucius In stitute at the University of Cape Town promotes the learning of Chinese language and culture, and a broader and more informed understand of China in Cape Town area and across South Africa.
We seek to attract more interest in the Chinese language and understanding of the Chinese culture among students and faculty at UCT, as well as the broader communities in Cape Town. In light of the ever-growing business and trade relations between China and South Africa, the demand for learning Chinese is greater. Cape Town, both as a beautiful scenic city and a hub of business, will play more important roles in the ties between China and South Africa.
Officially launched in January 2010, the establishment of the Confucius Institute at UCT is a big step forward in transformation at UCT in that it will bring the Chinese language program to UCT and facilitate academic exchanges between students and faculty members at UCT with those at Sun Yet-sen University, Guangzhou, China.
On 1 November, 2011, Dr. Max Price, the VC of UCT, wrote the inscription for a picture book of the Confucius Institute to mark its 5th anniversary. It reads "The University of Cape Town is delighted to celebrate 5 years of success of the C.I.s globally. You have achieved so much, and we are very pleased to be part of it."
The year 2014 will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the founding of the first Confucius Institute in the world, and will also see UCT's Confucius Institute enter its fifth year in operation. We will also observe the "Confucius Institute Day" on 27 September, 2014 with a series of events on and off campus, together with around 1,000 Confucius Institutes and Classrooms worldwide.
