CI-UCT participated in the 9th Chinese Bridge Preliminary Contest in South Africa for Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign Secondary School Students
On Saturday 13th August, the 9th Chinese Bridge Preliminary Contest in South Africa for Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign Secondary School Students was held in Cape Academy for Math, Science and Technology. Fourteen competitors from various secondary schools participated in the competition. Four students from Groote Schuur High School represented the Confucius Institute (CI) at UCT.
The theme of the competition was Learn Chinese, Double Your World and consisted of three parts: written examination, speech and talent show. In the speech category, the students shared their unique experience of learning Mandarin and expressed how it enriched their worlds. Later, the students entertained the audience with their talent shows: singing Chinese songs, Chinese traditional dancing, Chinese calligraphy and Chinese Kungfu, etc. Their enthusiasm for this universal language and its colourful culture was the same despite their varying duration in learning.

“This is the first time the students participated in the competition," Danna Liu, the tutoring teacher at CI, said. 'Even though we didn’t get any prize, their performances still impressed me, considering that they only learned Mandarin for seven months. And I believe this is a great opportunity for us to know our weaknesses and make efforts to enhance in the future.”
