On Wednesday 10th August, Professor Qin, the Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute (CI) at UCT, and colleagues visited Norma Road Primary School to discuss the possibility of long-term cooperation in the offering of Mandarin classes at the school.

During the visit, the acting Principal stated that more than 500 students showed great interest in learning Mandarin. It was concluded that a Mandarin course will be included as a part of the Life Skill credit-bearing course for Grade 1 to Grade 3, and as an extra-curricular course for Grade 4 to Grade 6.

After the discussion, teacher Fareda gave the visitors a short tour of the school. In the classroom, the students gave a warm welcome to the CI teachers, who took the opportunity to teach the students some simple phrases in Mandarin, such as Nihao (Hello), Xiexie (Thank you) and Zaijian (Goodbye). When the students were asked what they know about China, some said Chinese Kungfu, Pandas and Chopsticks.

The volunteer teacher Ying Zhang is teaching the students to say Mandarin.

As for the long-term cooperation, Professor Qin acknowledged that CIUCT intends to establish an affiliated Confucius Classroom in Noma Road Primary School.
